break. president obama talking about breaking the quote/unquote fever of republicans and looking at what they have proposed is taking the battle away from the debt ceiling and moving it to having the senate duke it out over the budget process. of course, this means we will have another budget fiscal fight ahead but instead of it being over the debt ceiling, which a default would have been cataclysmic for the government or a government shutdown, this is an ability to be over the terrain of the budget process, normal give and take between the house, the senate, the white house coming in. and a probably more functional way to reduce spending and also get the fiscal house in order rather than having it attached to the debt ceiling fight. >> thank you very much, mark. see you in d.c. for the inauguration. and have a great weekend, buddy. >> you, too. >>> up next from manti te'o's high hopes to lance armstrong admitting he's lied to us for years, should the scandals mat tore the men and women in washington? why they say d.c. lawmakers should be concerned about those two stories. at 1:45, the a

and barack obama said that was the top priority but since november 6th, all we have talked about is debt reduction. that wasn't an issue. the words fiscal cliff were never uttered at any point in any one of the three presidential debates and that became the entire conversation for six weeks after the election and now more debt reduction. this is why we have elections to settle these issues. the issue to focus on is jobs. the president had a jobs plan on the table for two years now, the american jobs act. not going to get it passed in full but look at some of the elements of that. let's start to focus on that issue because that's the issue the american people care about. >> i want to play an excerpt of the president's first inauguration. let's play a little bit of what he said. >> today, i say to you that the challenges we face are real. they are serious and they are many. they will not be met easily or in a short span of time. but know this, america. they will be met. >> zachary, the president said that they will be met. the same challenges and many cases, some improvements we have seen

and senior political reporter for politico and michael smerconish, a radio talk show host. let me start with you. there is an article today that said why president obama's gun plan may be doomed and said there strong indications that comprehensive legislation won't even see a vote on the house flew. you heard me. wasn't to put him on the pot, but i watched like you since new town and people said things have changed. i have yet to see and maybe you know of a few republican who is said things have changed and maybe it is time to put a man on assault weapons or some of the language ta is different than what we are hearing accusing the president of tyranny a power grab and the other accusations. >> let's separate two things. first of all, if you watch that press conference, a good solid one third was a direct appeal to the american people. he repeated himself over and over again. you heard congressman larson on the talking points and common sense. this is only going to happen if the american people want it to happen. you are going to see i think the president is prepared to use capital on t

the government to make sure that president obama understands we're serious. we're talking about whether or not to kick the can down the road. i think mood is that we have come to the end of the road. with that kind of talk from republicans, in the house, will anything get done? >> i think, listen, they have to come up with some kind of agreement. if they don't, in fact, her premonition will come true and parts of the government will shut down. listen. you have an echo of different republican leader that is are out there saying that the theory of a government shutdown would not be such a bad idea and setting this up, trying to desensitize what would otherwise be a pretty calamitous thing for the country and the economy. >> we heard the same thing about the fiscal cliff from progressives on this show saying let's go over the cliff, how bad could it be? >> absolutely. people on the left saying the same thing and what i think is going to happen here is going to come to a short-term agreement and they're going to wait for the president's budget which is due out i think the beginning of febru

that as an amen moment or listen to the president or not yesterday and you start talking ant and some lawmakers referred to him as king obama and tyranny, is that fringe or is that a larger portion of the nra's supporters and not just its leadership? >> well, i think it's a little of both. they have a longer ad which is about four minutes and as they sort of lay out the double down on this idea of the president's kids, mentioned david gregory's kids, as well. they have a ticker showing the nra membership going up because of the fight. the nra in this ad, it isn't about truth but propaganda. it is about ginny up support of gun lobby, for buying guns. it's about ginnying up a membership and donors to that organization. and they do that very well. i mean, i think historically, when's happened to the nra is the court controversy and in that way they become more powerful because they're able to swell their membership. >> so in fairness, chris, i won't ask you relating to republicans but to some democrats, joe manchin's comments regarding the president said i'm disappointed the president did not reco
